“Don’t hold back,” Jered’s voice pulls me back into the real world and, for a second, I’m not sure if I’m grateful or pissed. Those are memories I’ve kept locked away for years, but Ethan is trying to bulldoze his way into my life and it’s triggering all sorts of flashbacks.

“Huh?” I’m confused. I didn’t listen to a single word he just said. “Sorry, I missed that.”

“I said… Once we get to the opening party at Luxe, drink as much as you need to get yourself in the right mood, sugar plum. Don’t hold back. I know you can hold your liquor and shit, but you need to get on Ethan’s good side,” Jered reiterates, tilting back in his leather swivel chair.

I get up and shake my head.

“I can’t have this conversation with you,” I reply, and hang my purse on my shoulder, turning to leave. “I’ll see you at Luxe at 7pm, sharp. Don’t you dare be late.”

“Relax, sugar plum, I’m gonna be on time,” he smirks.

“Don’t fucking ‘sugar plum’ me, Jered!” I’m pissed off and for good reason. “You brought me into this mess, in the first place! You don’t get to ease your way out of it! I’ll see you at seven.”

Jered opens his mouth to respond but nothing comes out. Nothing he’d say could possibly make me feel less miserable or rotten for what I’m about to do. After all these years of keeping myself away from Ethan, of struggling to get him out of my mind and out of my heart, I now have to flirt my way into his house and snatch that fucking bracelet.
